Coiling

Tuesday 5th March.

Today was all about coiling. Using a good sculpting clay, in this case Buff Raku Trachyte we were asked to build an ovoid that would be about 20 cm in height after firing. The ovoid was to be built using clay coils only, with no tools.

Starting to build the ovoid and trying to keep the shape . Smoothing and blending the coils to keep the ovoid strong.
Putting the coiled top in. Its height is around 25 cms to allow for shrinkage after firing
Finished ovoid. Pierced a small hole in the bottom to allow for air to escape during firing.

Enjoyed this task, although it is quite hard to keep the ovoids exterior nice and smooth without the use of any tools. Now to practice ovoids at home getting more and more complicated each time.
